New Crew Needed
NOMINATIONS are open for six young people to join the next crew of the Young Endeavour.
Elodi Turri was lucky to be one of 28 young people, including six from the Upper Hunter Shire area who climbed aboard a voyage in March this year and encourages other young people take a chance and nominate.
“I’d just tell them t go for it!” said Ms Turri.
“Before I went everyone was telling me it was a trip of a lifetime and I wouldn’t forget it and they were absolutely right, so now I am giving the same advice to people who have asked me what it was like,” she said.
“The first half of the trip I did spend feeding the fish,” she laughed.
“But once I got over that it was incredible.
“For someone like me who has always lived inland, I’d never been out out on a ship or the ocean, so it was all a bit scary and new, but I am so glad I took the chance and did it.
“Now on a boat I’d certainly have the lingo down for the ropes and things, I could set the sails, fold them away, help out a crew, help navigate, all the good things that you need on a boat,” she said.
“Just go for it, you’ll never get the same experience again, it’s a chance you just have to take and you won’t regret,” Elodi Turri said.
How to nominate:
Businesses, schools, sporting clubs and community groups are eligible to nominate a young person for a fee.
Businesses can choose from three levels of sponsorship:
- gold for $1,000 or more to nominate two young people;
- silver starting at $250 to nominate one young person, or
- bronze for a donation of up to $249, but no nomination.
Schools, sporting cubs and community groups can nominate a young person for $60.
The young people nominated will be in a draw for the six berths; the names of three girls and three boys will be drawn during a special dinner for sponsors and nominees later this year.
Nominations close on August 12.
