Toddler Ran Into Traffic

A two year old boy ran into traffic on Kelly Street at approximately midday and had a lucky escape.

The young boy had run between two cars parked at the front of Target and into traffic, fortunately the driver was able to swerve and break in time, so that he ran into the side of the car and only sustained minor injuries including a bleeding nose.

20160615Accident01Senior Constable Rodney Lea, a trained crash investigator said thankfully it was the right vehicle and the right driver.

“It was lucky the driver was going so slowly and had the time to break,” he said.

“There is only half a metre between the vehicle and the side of the road, it is not much time to react,” he said.

“The best reaction time for a driver is 1.4 seconds and even with the fastest reaction time and only travelling at 50 kilometres it will take 14 metres for the vehicle to stop, plus you have to factor in the wash off speed, so the bigger the vehicle the longer it will take.

“It was just lucky that the driver was in a small car driving slowly and was able to swerve and break,” Senior Constable Rodney Lea said.

The diver of the car Maree McGow was shaken by the accident and relieved the little boy was ok.

“I am still so shocked by it all,” said Ms McGow.

“I was driving slowly because I was looking for a park, when I saw him run out,” she said.

“I am just so glad the little one is ok,” Maree McGow said.
