The Verge Deepens
SEVERAL years ago Council ripped out four trees on Susan Street and two on Main Street without any consultation with the landowner.
The two trees on Main Street were taken out for safety reasons since it was near an intersection which the owners understood, but the four on Susan Street Council deemed poisonous.
After the trees were ripped out without discussion and no offer of replacement trees, the landowners thought the land was Council’s to do with what they pleased.
Initially the landowners said they did attempt to mow the area, but ran into a problem each time.
“They didn’t remove the tree roots and they left concrete from where they had worked on the drains, so each time we went to mow it the mower would be wrecked and it’s not like Council would buy us a new mower so we stopped mowing the area,” said Karlene Duwakin.
“Since then Council has mown the strip and they take very good care of it around horse week,” she said.
Yesterday the owners received a phone call from a Council representative informing them they would have to start maintaining the area themselves to which the owners said they would meet Council half way and take care of it for six months of the year during the winter.
Council have not responded to enquiries about how the matter will be resolved, but have confirmed footpaths are the property of Council, but they rely on landowners to mow them.
