Light Horse Remembered in Murrurundi
THIS weekend the township of Murrurundi will commemorate the centenary of the Battle of Beersheba which was fought on October 31, 1917.
The battle was pivotal in crushing the Ottoman line and ultimately the Ottoman control over the Middle East.
The 12th Light Horse Troop of Murrurundi has maintained a strong connection with the origins of the Light Horse, a highlight of ANZAC Day commemorations and many local events.
The stories of two local families the Wright’s and the Hayden’s will feature during the weekend.
Previously unseen photographs taken by Maxwell Wright at the Battle of Beersheba will be on display at the Historical Society and Museum Hall and author Mark Greenwood will have his book “Midnight” about Guy Haydon and his horse Midnight who were also in the Battle for sale at the RSL Hall.
Events commemorating the centenary of the Battle include:
Saturday, October 28
- 10am – 2pm: Previously unseen photos from local soldier Maxwell Wright during the Battle Of Beersheba, Historical Society and Museum Hall.
- 10am – 4pm: Local authors with books on their family connection to Beersheba and artwork from local school students.
- 11am – 12pm: 12th Light Horse Parade, Wilson Memorial Oval, Murrurundi.
- 12pm: Lunch at the Murrurundi Bowling Club with a photographic display.
- 3pm: Screening of Whaler at Murrurundi Bowling Club.
Sunday, October 29
- 10am – 2pm: Previously unseen photos from local soldier Maxwell Wright during the Battle Of Beersheba, Historical Society and Museum Hall.
