Calling All the Rugby Ladies
SCONE held the first all women’s rugby 7’s tournament last year, attracting teams and a buzz throughout the state and the call is out for the second tournament in November.
Bridget Hunt, secretary and treasurer for the Tournament said they have already attracted more teams than last year.
“There are 10 senior teams set to play already and this year we will also run an under 17’s and under 15’s competition,” said Ms Hunt.
“After the Australian girls going so well in the Olympics and Commonwealth Games women’s rugby is getting so much more promotion,” she said.
“It’s a fast paced game and there is such an open field it is great to watch,” she said.
“Last year it drew a great crowd and this year we are trying to get the word out to more locals to come and watch,” she said.
There will be some star players in the tournament, but local girl Kate Brown will be on the sidelines this year due to an injured knee.
Garry Walsh, development officer for NSW Rugby will be at the tournament, working with teams throughout the day and giving the players some tips before the game.
This year the Scone Club hopes to attract more young players to the game by holding a junior tournament.
“I’d encourage them to just get in and have a go and they learn so much with people like Garry there,” said Bridget Hunt.
“Last year Mahlia (Murphy a Wallaroo) joined teams in their warm ups and gave them pointers,” she said.
The tournament will be held on November 3 and 4. See the Community Calendar for more details: Women’s Rugby 7’s Tournament – Scone.
