Police Urge Businesses to Install Cameras

Filed in Recent News by August 23, 2019

LAST week five businesses and one unoccupied residence in Scone were broken into and police believe the offenders were targeting cash.

Police confirmed the break-ins occurred in the early hours of August 13 and 15 causing significant damage.

Guy Guiana, Hunter Valley Chief Inspector, said police were concerned about the nature of the offences which happen irregularly.

“We are very aware of the disruption and financial loss suffered by the business owners and how unsettling it is for the community in general to have this happen in a place like Scone,” said Ch Insp Guiana.

“For some time now, police have been talking to various businesses around town to promote safety and security measures,” he said.

“I am aware of the costs involved but business owners should consider strengthening security – or target hardening,” he said.

“There are some safety measures which they can take to try and reduce the possibility of break-ins.

“A good quality CCTV system with prominent warning signage can be a deterrent and will provide valuable evidence to investigating police if an incident does occur,” he said.

Police have encouraged small businesses to access a rebate scheme by SafeWork NSW for the installation of approved security systems.

“Retail outlets and other businesses that deal in cash transactions should limit the amount of money kept on the premises after hours and display prominent signage to that effect,” said Ch Insp Guiana.

“At all times, cash should be held securely and out of public view,” Guy Guiana said.

Some additional safety tips from police include:

  •    Remove obstacles and rubbish from boundaries, footpaths, driveways, car parks and buildings
  •    Install security lighting around the perimeter, particularly near entry/exit points
  •    Activate after hours internal lighting on a timer or throughout the night – LED lighting is effective and can reduce costs
  •    All dead lock sets should comply with the Australian Building Code and fire regulations
  •    Consider shatter resistant glass, security doors, etc.
  •    Record descriptions, models/serial numbers of property owned by the business
  •    Have a monitored intruder alarm system installed.

Anyone with any information about these or any other crimes in the local area are asked to contact Scone Police Station on 02 6544 0199 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000. Information given can be treated as strictly confidential if preferred.
