Covid: Hunter area climbing past Sydney in cases

WHILE covid numbers in Sydney are decreasing, numbers in regional areas are increasing, with Hunter New England Health third on the list for most cases.

A new genomic strain of delta has been identified in 8 cases in the state, which is being investigated. At this stage there is no evidence this new strain of delta is different in transmissibility or vaccine effectiveness, but investigations are continuing.

Sewerage has tested positive to the virus in Wee Waa and Quirindi.

In the Hunter New England in the past 24 hours:

  • 97 new cases
  • 30 people hospitalised
  • 4 people in intensive care
  • 27 are from Lake Macquarie LGA
  • 23 are from Cessnock LGA
  • 17 are from Maitland LGA
  • 8 are from Tamworth Regional LGA
  • 6 are from Newcastle LGA
  • 6 are from MidCoast LGA
  • 6 are from Singleton LGA
  • 3 are from Port Stephens LGA
  • 1 is from Gunnedah LGA (Curlewis)
Total active cases in some Hunter New England LGAs:
  • 385 – Lake Macquarie
  • 318 – Newcastle
  • 159 – Maitland
  • 141 – Cessnock
  • 56 – Port Stephens
  • 19 – Muswellbrook
  • 17 – Singleton

On the Central Coast there are currently 702 active cases.

  • 11 people have died
